Overview

Pogostemonis Herba, derived from the dried aerial parts of *Pogostemon cablin* (Blanco) Benth., is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) known as Huoxiang. It is widely used for its aromatic, damp-resolving, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. The herb contains bioactive compounds such as patchouli alcohol, pogostone, and various flavonoids. In clinical and preclinical research, it has demonstrated efficacy in treating gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) and ulcerative colitis by modulating gut microbiota and neurotransmitter release. It is also a key component in several TCM formulas for COVID-19 and influenza, where it acts by inhibiting viral entry (RBD-ACE2 binding) and suppressing virus-induced inflammation. Additionally, its active ingredient patchouli alcohol shows neuroprotective potential in Alzheimer's disease models by targeting the C/EBPβ/AEP and SIRT1 pathways.
