PolEpi is a polysaccharide-based nanoparticle drug delivery platform developed by NanoGroup S.A. for targeted oncology applications. The platform consists of polyaldehydedextran nanoparticles that encapsulate the chemotherapeutic agent epirubicin. PolEpi utilizes the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect for passive tumor targeting and a pH-dependent release mechanism to trigger drug discharge within the acidic tumor microenvironment. Additionally, the saccharide shell of the nanoparticles may facilitate active targeting via glucose transporters (GLUT) that are overexpressed on cancer cell membranes. Preclinical studies in ovarian tumor-bearing mice have demonstrated that PolEpi achieves significantly higher accumulation and retention in tumor tissue compared to free epirubicin hydrochloride, showing up to 29-fold higher fluorescence signal in tumors at 24 hours post-injection.
