Policresulen is a synthetic polymolecular organic acid produced by the condensation of meta-cresolsulfonic acid and formaldehyde. It acts as a topical hemostatic and antiseptic agent primarily used for the treatment of gynecological infections (such as cervicitis and vaginitis), anal disorders (including hemorrhoids), ulcers of the oral cavity (like canker sores), and other mucous membrane lesions[1][5][7]. Policresulen exerts its effects through selective coagulation of necrotic or pathologically altered tissues while sparing healthy tissue, promoting rapid reepithelialization. Its mechanism includes chemical debridement via denaturation of cellular proteins in devitalized cells, hemostasis by coagulating blood proteins and inducing vasoconstriction in small blood vessels, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria (e.g., staphylococcus spp., streptococcus spp.), gram-negative bacteria, fungi (notably Candida albicans), protozoa such as Trichomonas vaginalis, with minimal effect on normal lactobacillus flora[3][5][6][7]. Policresulen also has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties[8].
