Overview

Polikapran (Polycapran) is an absorbable local hemostatic agent developed by the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University. It is composed of monocarboxycellulose (oxidized cellulose), a biodegradable polymer that facilitates the arrest of capillary and parenchymal bleeding. Upon contact with blood, Polikapran reacts with hemoglobin to form a gelatinous mass that serves as a matrix for fibrin clot formation and adheres to the wound surface. The material is biocompatible and undergoes complete enzymatic resorption within 14 to 30 days, eliminating the need for secondary surgical removal. It is primarily indicated for use in general surgery, dentistry, and trauma to manage bleeding from surgical sites and injuries.
