Overview

polio vaccine + Mosquirix refers to the co-administration or combination regimen of GlaxoSmithKline's RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine (brand name Mosquirix) and an oral polio vaccine (such as Polio Sabin). Mosquirix is a recombinant protein-based vaccine that targets the circumsporozoite protein (CSP) of the *Plasmodium falciparum* parasite. It is formulated with the AS01 adjuvant system, which contains MPL and QS-21, to induce high levels of humoral and cellular immunity that block the parasite from infecting the liver. Mosquirix is the first malaria vaccine to receive a positive scientific opinion from the EMA and recommendation from the WHO for use in children in endemic regions. The polio vaccine component is typically a live-attenuated (Sabin) oral vaccine providing protection against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. Clinical trials have evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of administering these vaccines concurrently within the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) schedule to ensure that the immune response to the malaria vaccine does not interfere with routine childhood polio vaccination.
