Overview
Poliomyelitis virus type 1 (live, attenuated) is a biologic vaccine containing a weakened form of the wild-type poliovirus serotype 1. It is administered orally and stimulates active immunity by inducing both humoral and mucosal immune responses against poliovirus. The live-attenuated strains used in this vaccine were originally developed by Albert Sabin. The primary indication is the prevention of poliomyelitis caused by infection with wild-type or circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses. This oral polio vaccine has played a central role in global polio eradication efforts due to its ability to induce strong intestinal immunity and interrupt person-to-person transmission.
