Overview

Poliovirus type 3 antigen (formaldehyde inactivated) is a purified, non-infectious viral component used to confer immunity against Type 3 poliovirus. It is most commonly derived from the Saukett strain, which is cultivated in cell lines such as Vero or primary monkey kidney cells. Following cultivation, the virus is concentrated, purified, and inactivated using formaldehyde (formalin), a process that destroys viral infectivity while maintaining the structural integrity of the D-antigen, the primary immunogenic site. This antigen is a critical constituent of the trivalent Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV), originally developed by Jonas Salk, and is also included in various pediatric combination vaccines (e.g., DTaP-IPV-HepB-Hib). Upon administration, it stimulates the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies that prevent the virus from infecting the central nervous system, thereby protecting against paralytic poliomyelitis.
