Overview
Polistes venom (paper wasp venom) is a biological allergen extract derived from the venom of paper wasps (genus *Polistes*), such as *Polistes dominula* or *Polistes fuscatus*. It is used as the active therapeutic agent in venom immunotherapy (VIT) to treat insect venom allergy and Hymenoptera allergy, including potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions to wasp stings. The therapy involves subcutaneous administration of gradually increasing doses of the venom extract to desensitize the immune system and induce immunological tolerance. This process modulates IgE-mediated responses and increases venom-specific IgG4 antibodies. Polistes venom extracts are manufactured by companies such as ALK-Abelló, Jubilant HollisterStier, and Stallergenes Greer, and are used both for diagnostic skin testing and therapeutic desensitization.
