Overview
Pollagen is a probiotic combination developed by Danisco (now part of IFF) for the management of seasonal allergic rhinitis, specifically birch pollen allergy. It consists of two specific bacterial strains, *Lactobacillus acidophilus* NCFM (ATCC 700396) and *Bifidobacterium lactis* Bl-04 (ATCC SD5219), formulated in a 1:3 ratio (25% NCFM to 75% Bl-04). The product is designed to modulate the gut-immune axis, promoting Th1-type immune responses and downregulating Th2-mediated allergic inflammation. Clinical trials in children have demonstrated that pre-seasonal administration of this probiotic combination reduces nasal allergy symptoms and prevents the infiltration of eosinophils into the nasal mucosa during the birch pollen season. It is sometimes formulated as a synbiotic with the addition of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS).
