Overview

Pollen allergoids are chemically modified allergen extracts used in subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT) for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. They are typically produced by polymerizing native pollen allergens (such as grass or tree pollen) using agents like glutaraldehyde or formaldehyde. This chemical modification significantly reduces the extract's IgE-binding capacity (allergenicity), thereby minimizing the risk of systemic allergic reactions during administration. Crucially, the modification preserves the T-cell epitopes (immunogenicity), allowing the drug to effectively modulate the immune system by inducing regulatory T-cells and shifting the cytokine profile from a Th2-driven response toward immune tolerance. These products are often adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide adjuvants to enhance their immunomodulatory effects and are administered in either pre-seasonal or year-round maintenance regimens.
