Overview

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic polymer of L-lactic acid widely used in medicine as an injectable bio-stimulatory dermal filler. Its primary mechanism is to stimulate collagen production by inducing a mild inflammatory response that leads to extracellular collagen deposition. PLLA is FDA-approved for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy associated with HIV and for correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles. It has also been used off-label for tissue augmentation, body plasticity, correction of skin laxity in various regions (face, neck, chest, buttocks), and general facial rejuvenation. The effects are gradual and long-lasting due to slow degradation kinetics[1][2][4][5][6].
