Overview

Poly-N-acetylglucosamine (p-GlcNAc) is a naturally derived polysaccharide-based hemostatic agent produced in a nanofiber format, typically isolated from marine microalgae. Developed primarily by Marine Polymer Technologies, it is used to achieve rapid surface hemostasis and treat various types of wounds, including surgical sites, trauma, and chronic ulcers. The material functions by activating platelets and providing a catalytic surface that accelerates the intrinsic coagulation cascade, specifically through the activation of Factor XII (Hageman factor), which leads to increased thrombin generation and fibrin polymerization. Notably, its efficacy is maintained in patients receiving antiplatelet therapy (e.g., aspirin or clopidogrel) and those with coagulopathies. It is available in various formulations such as patches (Syvek) for vascular access site closure and topical membranes (Talymed) for wound care.
