Polybactum

Polybactum is a vaginal mucoadhesive medical device (Class IIa) developed by Effik International. It is formulated as vaginal ovules containing polycarbophil, a bioadhesive agent, and lauryl glucoside, a nonionic surfactant. The product works by forming a protective film on the vaginal wall that acts as a mechanical barrier against pathogen colonization, specifically *Gardnerella vaginalis*. It exerts a selective bacteriostatic action that inhibits *G. vaginalis* while preserving normal physiological vaginal flora and helps acidify the vaginal pH to promote the growth of lactobacilli. Polybactum is indicated for reducing vaginal infections and preventing the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis, and it is marketed as an approved medical device in Europe.
