Polycarbophil calcium is a synthetic, bulk-forming laxative and antidiarrheal agent developed and marketed by Zhejiang Zuoli Pharmaceutical, often under the brand name Shu Ke. As a hydrophilic polymer, it is not absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract but instead acts locally within the intestinal lumen. In the management of constipation, polycarbophil calcium absorbs water to increase stool bulk and moisture, which stimulates peristalsis and facilitates easier evacuation. In the management of diarrhea, it absorbs excess free water to increase the consistency of the stool. It is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) characterized by either constipation or diarrhea.
