Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polydexa is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical preparation containing the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone, the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin, and the polypeptide antibiotic polymyxin B. It is primarily formulated as ear drops (otic solution) for the local treatment of external otitis (otitis externa) and acute otitis media in patients with an intact tympanic membrane. The combination provides dual therapeutic action: dexamethasone exerts a potent anti-inflammatory effect to reduce swelling, redness, and itching, while neomycin and polymyxin B act synergistically to provide broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. A nasal spray variant, Polydexa with Phenylephrine, is also available for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Polydexa was originally developed by Laboratoires Bouchara (now Bouchara-Recordati) and is marketed globally.
