Overview

Polydextrin is a synthetic polymer of glucose, typically synthesized from dextrose (glucose) along with small amounts of sorbitol and citric acid. It is widely recognized as a soluble dietary fiber and bulking agent in the food industry, where it is used to replace sugar and fat, reduce calories, and provide prebiotic benefits. In pharmaceutical applications, particularly in peritoneal ultrafiltration solutions, polydextrin functions as an osmotic agent to facilitate fluid removal from the body. It was originally developed by Pfizer Central Research Laboratories in the late 1960s as a low-calorie bulking agent and fiber substitute.
