Polydioxanone (PDO) is a synthetic, absorbable, monofilament polymer used extensively in medical devices, most notably as a surgical suture and in biodegradable stents. Chemically, it is a polyester produced by the ring-opening polymerization of the monomer p-dioxanone. It is characterized by its flexibility, high initial tensile strength, and predictable degradation profile via hydrolysis, typically losing most of its strength within 6 to 8 weeks and being fully absorbed within 6 to 7 months. In clinical practice, it is used for soft tissue approximation, including pediatric cardiovascular surgery, and as a material for biodegradable stents in the airways and gastrointestinal tract to provide temporary structural support without the need for surgical removal. It is also widely used in aesthetic medicine for thread lifting procedures.
