Overview

**Polyethylene glycol** is a family of inert, water-soluble polyether polymers whose clinical properties depend substantially on molecular weight and formulation. High-molecular-weight oral preparations, particularly polyethylene glycol 3350, act as **osmotic laxatives**: they remain largely unabsorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and retain water in the bowel lumen, softening stool and promoting bowel movements. Polyethylene glycol is also used in bowel-cleansing preparations, typically with electrolytes, and can serve as a lubricant or vehicle in ophthalmic formulations. The unqualified term is not chemically specific because it can refer to PEG materials with different average molecular weights and clinical uses.
