Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polyethylene glycol + bisacodyl is a combination laxative product used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy in adults. It consists of two active components: bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative that acts on the colonic mucosa to increase peristalsis, and a polyethylene glycol-electrolyte solution (PEG-3350 with electrolytes), an osmotic laxative that induces catharsis by increasing water retention in the intestinal lumen. This combination is typically administered as a split-dose or sequential regimen, where the bisacodyl tablet is taken first to initiate bowel movements, followed by the PEG solution. This approach allows for a reduced volume of PEG solution (typically 2 liters) compared to standard 4-liter PEG regimens, which significantly improves patient compliance and tolerability while maintaining high efficacy for colon visualization.
