Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polyethylene glycol + sodium sulfate + sodium chloride + potassium chloride + sodium bicarbonate is a compound osmotic laxative formulation primarily used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy, barium enema X-ray examination, or surgical procedures, and for the treatment of functional constipation. The product, widely known in China under the brand name **Shutaiqing**, consists of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000 (or 3350 in some formulations) and a balanced mixture of electrolytes. PEG acts as an osmotic agent that retains water in the intestinal lumen, increasing stool volume and stimulating peristalsis. Sodium sulfate provides additional osmotic pressure to facilitate bowel evacuation. The inclusion of electrolytes (sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate) is critical to maintaining the body's isosmotic balance during the induced diarrhea, thereby minimizing the risk of clinically significant fluid or electrolyte shifts. A similar formulation was previously marketed in the United States under the brand name **Suclear**.
