Overview
Polyethylene glycol + citrate + simethicone is an oral pharmaceutical combination used primarily as a bowel preparation agent before colonoscopy. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) acts as an osmotic laxative to induce bowel movements by retaining water in the stool. Citrate serves as an additional osmotic agent to enhance the laxative effect. Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that reduces gas bubbles and foam in the gastrointestinal tract, improving mucosal visibility during endoscopic procedures and reducing symptoms such as bloating and discomfort. The combination improves patient tolerability and acceptability of bowel cleansing regimens compared to PEG alone, with better gastrointestinal comfort but no significant difference in cecal intubation rate or time[1][4][5]. This combination does not appear to be associated with major adverse effects.
