Overview

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) + electrolytes + ascorbic acid is an osmotic bowel cleansing preparation used to clear the colon in preparation for colonoscopy or other gastrointestinal procedures. It typically consists of PEG 3350, electrolytes (such as sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride), and a high dose of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and sodium ascorbate. The PEG and electrolytes work by retaining water in the intestinal lumen, while the ascorbic acid components act as additional osmotic agents. This combination allows for effective bowel cleansing with lower fluid volumes (e.g., 1L or 2L) compared to traditional 4L PEG solutions, which can improve patient compliance and tolerability.
