Overview

polyethylene glycol-Queen's University-bowel preparation refers to a specific bowel cleansing regimen evaluated by Queen's University in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT01844466). This regimen consists of a split-dose administration of polyethylene glycol (PEG), an osmotic laxative, in combination with prucalopride, a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist. PEG functions by creating an osmotic gradient that retains water within the intestinal lumen, thereby increasing stool volume and stimulating bowel movements. Prucalopride acts as a prokinetic agent, enhancing colonic motility to facilitate the transit of a colon capsule through the gastrointestinal tract. This combination is specifically designed to optimize mucosal visualization and capsule completion rates in patients undergoing colon capsule endoscopy, addressing the limitations of standard PEG-only preparations.
