Overview
Polyethylene glycol 3350 is a synthetic polymer used as an osmotic laxative to treat occasional constipation and for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. It works by retaining water in the stool through osmotic action in the colon and gastrointestinal tract. This increases stool frequency and softens stools to facilitate easier passage. Polyethylene glycol 3350 is minimally absorbed systemically and is excreted unchanged in feces; only about 0.2% may be absorbed and rapidly excreted via urine. It is not metabolized or fermented by colonic bacteria[1][2][3][4][5]. The drug is available over-the-counter as a powder for oral solution.
