Polyethylene glycol 3350 + ascorbic acid + sodium ascorbate + sodium chloride + potassium chloride is an osmotic laxative combination developed by Norgine Limited for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other colonic procedures. This formulation, often referred to as a PEG-ascorbate bowel preparation, works through the synergistic osmotic actions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350 and a high dose of vitamin C (ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate). PEG 3350 is a non-absorbable polymer that retains water in the intestinal lumen, while the ascorbate components provide an additional osmotic load that is not fully absorbed in the small intestine, leading to effective purgation of the colon. The inclusion of electrolytes such as sodium chloride and potassium chloride helps to maintain the patient's electrolyte balance and prevent significant fluid shifts during the cleansing process. This combination is typically administered as a reconstituted oral solution and is known for providing a lower-volume alternative to traditional 4-liter PEG-based preparations.
