Polyethylene glycol 4000 with electrolytes is an osmotic laxative used primarily for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other diagnostic procedures. The formulation combines polyethylene glycol (PEG) of average molecular weight 4000 with various electrolytes (such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sometimes sodium sulfate) to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance during the induced diarrhea. The mechanism of action involves PEG binding water through hydrogen bonding in the intestinal lumen, increasing fecal water content and promoting soft stools and rapid evacuation. Electrolytes are included to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance during treatment. This combination is considered safe and effective for short-term use in bowel preparation or for treating constipation[1][5][6].
