Overview

Polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG 8000) is a synthetic, water-soluble polymer with a molecular weight of approximately 8000 daltons. While primarily utilized as a pharmaceutical excipient—serving as a solvent, plasticizer, surfactant, and tablet binder—it also functions as an osmotic laxative. In preclinical research, PEG 8000 has demonstrated potent chemopreventive properties against colon cancer, particularly in rat models. Its mechanism of action in this context is attributed to the induction of high osmotic pressure, which selectively inhibits the growth of proliferating cancer cells by inducing cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase and causing cell shrinkage. It is manufactured by various companies including BASF and Venus Ethoxyethers.
