Overview
Polyethylene glycol formulation (Devirex) is an investigational topical therapeutic developed by the Swiss biotechnology company Devirex AG for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes. The product consists of a specific formulation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) designed for application to active lesions. Unlike traditional antiviral drugs that target viral enzymes, this PEG-based formulation is thought to exert its effect through physical and osmotic mechanisms, potentially disrupting the lipid envelope of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and inhibiting viral attachment and shedding. A Phase II clinical trial (NCT01410019) was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the formulation, specifically its impact on the duration of viral shedding and lesion healing time. Although the trial was completed in 2012, there has been no public evidence of further clinical development or regulatory approval.
