Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polygalacturonic acid + caprylic acid (PG+CAP) is an investigational, non-antibiotic, and non-antiseptic topical antimicrobial wound ointment. It combines two plant-derived compounds: polygalacturonic acid (PG), derived from apple or citrus pectin, and caprylic acid (CAP), a medium-chain fatty acid derived from coconut. Caprylic acid acts as the active antimicrobial agent, physically disrupting microbial cell membranes and biofilms, while polygalacturonic acid emulsifies caprylic acid, improves its bioavailability, maintains an optimal acidic pH, and inhibits destructive wound proteases. PG+CAP has demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy in eradicating mature bacterial and fungal biofilms (including MRSA, multidrug-resistant *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, and *Candida* species) in vitro and has shown safety and efficacy in clinical trials for the management of chronic, microbially contaminated full-thickness wounds.
