Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polygeline is a gelatin-based colloid solution used as a plasma volume expander for the treatment of hypovolemia—a condition characterized by decreased circulating blood volume. It is commonly administered intravenously in clinical settings such as surgery, trauma, burns, and shock to rapidly restore blood volume and improve hemodynamic stability[1][3][5]. Polygeline is a polymer of urea and degraded gelatin-derived polypeptides with an average molecular weight around 30,000–35,000 Daltons[6][7]. Its mechanism of action involves increasing oncotic pressure in the bloodstream to draw fluid into the vascular compartment. The drug has a short half-life (3–6 hours), which may be prolonged in patients with renal impairment[6]. It is marketed under brand names such as Haemaccel and used for indications including hypovolemic shock due to hemorrhage or burns, plasma exchange procedures, extracorporeal circulation support during surgery, isolated organ perfusion procedures, and as a carrier solution for insulin administration[3][7].
