Overview

Polygeline + sodium chloride (marketed as Haemaccel) is a plasma volume expander consisting of a 3.5% solution of polygeline, a synthetic colloid produced by the cross-linking of degraded bovine gelatin with urea. It is administered intravenously to treat hypovolemic shock resulting from hemorrhage, trauma, burns, or surgical procedures. The polygeline molecules have a mean molecular weight of 30,000–35,000 Da, which allows them to remain within the intravascular compartment and exert oncotic pressure, thereby expanding blood volume by approximately 70–80% of the infused volume. The formulation includes electrolytes such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride to maintain isotonicity and physiological balance. It is primarily eliminated by the kidneys and has a half-life of 4 to 6 hours.
