Overview

Polyglycolic acid (PGA) is a synthetic, biodegradable, and biocompatible polymer derived from glycolic acid. It is primarily used in medicine as an absorbable suture material and for reinforcing injured tissues during surgery. PGA sutures are strong, flexible, non-antigenic, non-pyrogenic, and offer excellent knot security with predictable absorption via hydrolysis. The material degrades in the body over time into glycolic acid monomers that are metabolized naturally. Its main medical applications include general surgery (skin closure and internal tissue approximation), orthopedic surgery (tendon/ligament repair), plastic/reconstructive surgery (wound closure/facial reconstruction), gastrointestinal surgery (intestinal anastomosis), gynecological procedures (hysterectomy/pelvic floor repair), and ophthalmology[1][2][3][4][5]. Outside of medicine, PGA is also used in 3D printing for custom implants due to its processability and controlled degradation properties[2]. While highly effective as a surgical reinforcement mesh or suture material, it can induce chronic inflammation or adhesion if not properly managed[1].
