Overview

Polygonatum sibiricum is a perennial herb in the Asparagaceae family whose rhizome, known as "Huang Jing" in Chinese medicine, has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy. It is traditionally employed to replenish qi and yin, invigorate the spleen, moisten the lung, strengthen the kidney, and support overall vitality. The main bioactive components include polysaccharides (notably Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharides or PSP), saponins (glucosides), flavone glycosides (such as rutin and isoquercetin), coumarins (like scopoletin), steroids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, lignans, vitamins and various acids[1][6][4]. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated antioxidant activity; anti-inflammatory effects; hypolipidemic action; anti-aging properties; immune system modulation; anti-fatigue effects; cardiovascular protection; hepatoprotection; antidiabetic activity via improved insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism; neuroprotective benefits including potential improvement of learning/memory through reduction of oxidative stress[1][2][3][4][5][6]. In vitro and animal studies also suggest possible applications in cancer prevention/treatment by inducing apoptosis/autophagy or enhancing immune response[5]. Topically or orally administered extracts are used for skin hydration/soothing due to their antioxidant/anti-inflammatory actions[7].
