Overview

Polygonum acre, also known as *Persicaria punctata* or dotted smartweed, is a botanical extract utilized for its phlebotonic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. It is primarily used in the management of vascular conditions, specifically hemorrhoidal disease and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The extract contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (including persicarin), tannins, and sesquiterpene dialdehydes like polygodial. These constituents are thought to improve venous tone, reduce capillary permeability, and inhibit inflammatory mediators. In clinical settings, particularly in South American phytotherapy, it is frequently formulated in combination with *Aesculus hippocastanum* (horse chestnut), *Smilax papyracea* (sarsaparilla), and rutin to treat symptoms of chronic venous disease, such as edema, pain, and varicose dilatation.
