Overview
Polygonum cuspidatum (also known as Reynoutria japonica or Hu Zhang) is a botanical species widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a rich source of bioactive polyphenols, most notably resveratrol, polydatin, and emodin. In clinical development, specific formulations such as Polygonum cuspidatum Yizhi granules are being investigated for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's disease, potentially acting through neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory pathways. Other formulations, like Polygonum cuspidatum leaf capsules, have been evaluated for conditions such as hypertensive disease. The plant's extracts are known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential cardioprotective properties, often attributed to the activation of SIRT1 and modulation of amyloid-beta aggregation.
