Overview

Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), also known as polyhexanide, is a cationic polymer and broad-spectrum antiseptic widely used in wound care and oral hygiene. It has demonstrated impressive anti-leishmanial activity in vitro and in vivo against multiple species of *Leishmania*. PHMB acts primarily by entering cells and binding to nucleic acids, leading to cell death, rather than solely disrupting the microbial membrane. It is currently being investigated for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
