Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and biocompatible aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane. It is widely used in the medical field for applications including absorbable implants (e.g., fixation rods, plates, pins, screws), sutures, tissue engineering scaffolds, wound covers/membranes, and as a polymeric carrier in drug delivery systems[3][5][6][7]. In dermatology and aesthetics—specifically as poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)—it is used to restore facial volume loss (lipoatrophy) and correct wrinkles by stimulating collagen production through a local foreign body reaction[2][4]. PLA degrades into lactic acid within the body over months to years depending on formulation; its degradation products are metabolized naturally. Its immunologically inert profile reduces risk of chronic inflammation or adverse reactions[4][5].
