Overview

Polylactic acid (PLA) embolization microspheres are biodegradable, biocompatible spherical particles made from polylactic acid or its stereoisomer poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). These microspheres are used as temporary or permanent embolic agents in transcatheter arterial embolization procedures to block blood flow to targeted tissues such as tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and sites of hemorrhage. Their mechanism relies on physical occlusion of blood vessels. PLA/PLLA is favored for its controlled degradation rate and minimal inflammatory response. The spheres can be loaded with chemotherapeutic drugs or radionuclides for combined locoregional therapy and drug delivery. They have been applied in the management of solid tumors (notably hepatocellular carcinoma), vascular malformations, and severe bleeding[1][2][7]. Drug release from these systems occurs via diffusion and polymer degradation[7].
