Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polymerized type I collagen (also known as collagen-polyvinylpyrrolidone or collagen-PVP, marketed under the brand name Fibroquel) is a tissue regenerator and immunomodulator developed by Aspid. It is a gamma-irradiated covalent conjugate of pepsinized porcine type I collagen and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a citrate buffer solution. Polymerized type I collagen acts as an agonist of leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor 1 (LAIR-1), which downregulates STAT-1 phosphorylation and inhibits the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-8, and IL-17) and cell adhesion molecules. It is approved in Mexico for the treatment of osteoarthritis, wound healing, and abnormal scarring (such as keloids and hypertrophic scars), and has been investigated in Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and moderate-to-severe COVID-19.
