Overview

Polymyocytoid, also known as Polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid or Poly I:C, is a synthetic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) polymer that functions as an immunostimulant. It is used as an injection and acts by activating pattern recognition receptors such as Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) in endosomal compartments and Melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA-5) in the cytoplasm. This activation leads to the production of type I interferons and other cytokines, enhancing immune responses and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. Polymyocytoid is also recognized for its broad-spectrum antiviral properties and its ability to stimulate the reticuloendothelial system, thereby improving overall immune function and macrophage phagocytic activity. It is being investigated for its role in treating recurrent/metastatic liver cancer and has historically been used for viral infections like viral keratitis, herpes simplex, and as an auxiliary treatment for chronic viral hepatitis.
