Overview

Polymyxin B + teicoplanin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe infections, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Polymyxin B is a cationic polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides and phospholipids, leading to increased membrane permeability and cell death. Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of peptidoglycan precursors, resulting in inhibition of peptidoglycan polymerization and bacterial cell death. This combination has been studied as an adjunctive therapy for severe infections such as sepsis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), where it may improve survival rates compared to monotherapy[1][3][6].
