Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Polymyxin b sulfate + hydrocortisone + neomycin** is a fixed-dose topical anti-infective and anti-inflammatory combination drug used in ophthalmic and otic formulations for bacterial eye and ear conditions. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit, polymyxin B is a polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts the outer membrane of susceptible Gram-negative bacteria through binding to lipopolysaccharide and membrane phospholipids, and hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid receptor agonist that suppresses local inflammatory responses, reducing edema, erythema, and discomfort. The product is marketed under multiple prescription brand names including Cortisporin and Casporyn HC, with manufacturers including Sandoz and Casper Pharma, and is approved for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection or risk of infection exists as well as superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal and certain mastoidectomy or fenestration cavity infections.
