Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Polymyxin b sulfate + lidocaine hydrochloride + bacitracin zinc + neomycin** is a fixed-dose topical first-aid combination of three antibacterial agents and the local anesthetic lidocaine. Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell-wall precursor recycling through binding to undecaprenyl pyrophosphate; neomycin is an aminoglycoside that impairs bacterial protein synthesis through the 30S ribosomal subunit; and polymyxin B disrupts susceptible Gram-negative bacterial outer membranes by binding lipopolysaccharide. Lidocaine reversibly blocks voltage-gated sodium channels to provide local analgesia. The combination is supplied as an OTC ointment for prevention of infection and temporary relief of pain or discomfort in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is not a treatment for painful urethritis; that indication applies to lidocaine hydrochloride jelly products rather than this four-component topical antibiotic formulation.
