Polynucleotide sodium is an injectable biostimulatory agent consisting of highly purified long-chain DNA fragments (polynucleotides) extracted from salmon fish sperm, formulated as the sodium salt for increased solubility and stability[2][5]. It is primarily used for intra-articular injection to treat osteoarthritis and is being studied for regenerative purposes in aesthetic medicine, wound healing, and other tissue repair contexts[2][3][5]. Mechanistically, polynucleotide sodium acts as a biocompatible hydrogel, binding water and providing a favorable microenvironment for tissue regeneration and extracellular matrix formation; its breakdown products may fuel cellular metabolism (purines and pyrimidines), and it may also exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the NF-κB and Smad2/3 pathways and promoting the activation of adenosine A2A receptors[1][2][3][5]. Its clinical effects include pain reduction, anti-inflammatory action, and stimulation of cellular proliferation and tissue repair, with superior or comparable efficacy to hyaluronic acid in knee osteoarthritis[2][5].
