Overview
Polyphenol-rich Salicornia extract is an investigational botanical extract derived from the aerial parts of the halophyte plant *Salicornia ramosissima* (commonly known as glasswort or sea asparagus). It is a complex mixture containing numerous polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. The extract is being developed as a nutritional supplement/nutraceutical to prevent and treat neurovascular disorders, specifically targeting cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), lacunar stroke, and vascular cognitive impairment. Clinical studies, including the pilot trial NCT06076122 and the multicenter SALACUNAR trial, have evaluated its safety, tolerability, and potential efficacy in improving cognitive function (measured by MoCA scores) and reducing cardiovascular risk factors such as homocysteine and LDL cholesterol levels.
