Polypodium leucotomos is a tropical fern native to Central and South America. Its extract is rich in phenolic compounds such as ferulic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, and vanillic acid. Traditionally used in medicine for its antioxidant properties, it has been investigated primarily for photoprotection and the prevention of skin damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Mechanistically, Polypodium leucotomos acts by inhibiting the generation and release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), preventing UV- and ROS-induced DNA damage through inhibition of AP1 and NF-κB pathways. It also protects natural antioxidant enzyme systems in the skin[6][7]. Clinical studies have explored its use for conditions like actinic keratosis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), melasma, vitiligo, photoprotection against sunburns or rashes from sun exposure[3][4][5]. The extract is available both orally (capsules) and topically (creams). While generally considered safe with minimal side effects when used as directed[1][2], more extensive clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy across all indications.
