Overview

Polyporus umbellatus is an edible medicinal mushroom from the Polyporaceae family, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its diuretic, nephroprotective, antitumor, immuno-enhancing, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative activities[1][3][5]. The mushroom contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides (notably beta-glucans), triterpenoids, steroids (including ergosterol and ergone), nucleosides, anthraquinones, vitamins, and minerals[3][7]. Polysaccharides enhance immune function by stimulating white blood cells and cytokine production, while sterols and triterpenes influence renal sodium/potassium balance, contributing to its diuretic and kidney-protective effects[5]. Clinical trials have shown potential benefits in chronic kidney disease, advanced gastric cancer (as an adjunct to chemotherapy), chronic hepatitis B, and immune function[3]. The primary mechanisms of action are immune modulation (beta-glucans), diuresis (via steroid compounds acting on renal tubules and sodium-potassium channels), anti-inflammatory effects, and inhibition of cancer cell growth via apoptosis and reduced angiogenesis[1][3][5]. Some extracts (such as PSK, PUPP, LVE) are being researched and developed for specific therapeutic uses[3]. Side effects have rarely been reported but may include liver damage or allergic reactions in some individuals, especially at high doses or with drug interactions[3].
