Overview
Polyquaternium-42 is a cationic polymer belonging to the polyquaternium class of chemicals, primarily utilized as an antimicrobial preservative in ophthalmic formulations and personal care products. It is chemically categorized as a polyquaternary ammonium compound. In clinical research, specifically in studies sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, it has been evaluated as an experimental preservative for over-the-counter (OTC) lubricant eye drops (containing ingredients such as glycerin, hypromellose, and polyethylene glycol 400) intended for the treatment of dry eye. Its mechanism of action relies on its positive charge, which allows it to electrostatically bind to and disrupt the negatively charged cell membranes of bacteria and fungi, thereby maintaining the sterility of multi-dose pharmaceutical products.
