Polysaccharide-modified birch pollen is an investigational allergen immunotherapy (AIT) candidate developed by Wako Filter Technology. The product consists of birch pollen allergens that have been chemically modified through conjugation with polysaccharides (such as pullulan). This modification is designed to reduce the allergen's IgE-binding capacity, thereby minimizing the risk of immediate allergic reactions and anaphylaxis during treatment, while preserving or enhancing its ability to induce T-cell-mediated immune tolerance. The therapy aims to stimulate the production of protective antibodies, including IgG4 and IgA, and modulate cytokine profiles to treat birch pollen-induced allergic rhinitis. It is typically administered to induce both systemic and mucosal immune responses.
