Overview

Polysilicone-15 is a silicone-based organic compound used primarily as a UVB filter in cosmetic products such as sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, and color treatment products. It is the first polymeric UVB absorber consisting of chromophores attached to a silicone backbone. Polysilicone-15 absorbs UVB radiation with peak absorbance around 310–312 nm and helps protect skin and hair from sun damage. It also acts as an effective photostabilizer for other sunscreen agents like avobenzone and works synergistically with Ensulizole to boost SPF protection. The compound is approved for use up to 10% concentration in the EU and many other regions (but not the US). It appears as a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents of medium polarity[1][3][4][8].
